Tessa Rose Fujisaki

I was born in the suburbs of Seattle, WA to a Japanese-American father and a Slovak-American mother. This project planted a seed that grew into my desire to continue learning about my background and family history and creating projects to document them. It has led me to my next adventure: being an Assistant English Teacher in the Ibaraki prefecture of Japan for the next year through the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) program. I want to thank my Aunt Patrice for helping me find my grandma's belongings and providing important information about my grandma's life. I also want to thank my Uncle Keith and dad for their stories and guidance.

Dedicated to my grandma

After learning more about my grandma through this project, my appreciation for her has grown immensely. I have learned that she was a beautiful writer, a kind mother, and someone who defied injustice in an extremely brave way that has unfortunately been reduced to a paragraph in U.S. History textbooks. We must recognize injustices as we see them, and not hesitate to stand up for what we believe is fair and just.

I encourage you all to learn the history of your grandparents and their sacrifices to create better lives for their children and grandchildren.
